SOUTH MIDDLE SCHOOL

RAPID CITY SCHOOLS

Located just southwest of Rapid City’s historic downtown district, this replacement middle school is an iconic facility that sets a new educational standard for the school district.

Originally designed by MOA in 2014, the project was paused following an unsuccessful bond initiative. In 2020, alternate funding sources enabled the District to restart the project, and MOA led a redesign of the existing drawings. In the intervening six years, the District’s vision and goals for the new South Middle School had evolved—including a revised projected capacity from 650 to 1,250 students—so the MOA team began by verifying the existing program and then accordingly redesigning the school. The new facility sets a new standard for district operations, providing a set of modern, flexible learning environments, which cater to a variety of learning opportunities and styles.
