COGENT BIOSCIENCES RENOVATION

This interior renovation provides a new Boulder headquarters for Cogent Biosciences, a biotechnology company that develops solutions for genetically driven diseases.

Located in Boulder’s Pearl East Business Park, the space required a major transformation to satisfy Cogent’s specialized laboratory requirements. The renovation unites several existing office tenant spaces on a single floor of the U-shaped building, placing office, conference, and collaborative spaces are in the central portion of the space, while laboratory spaces occupy the “wings” of the floor plate. These laboratory spaces include chemistry, enzymology, cellular biology, pharmacology, robotics, hydrogenation, and nuclear magnetic resonance laboratories, along with a vivarium.

The technical requirements of the laboratory program demanded a full replacement of the building’s HVAC system, the addition of a back-up generator, water and electrical service upgrades, and an expansion of the building’s service yard. Working with a space designed as a typical office space, the team also faced the challenge of integrating the extensive mechanical system into the existing structural system with its limiting floor-to-floor height.

The completed space addresses Cogent’s current and future needs, supporting the development of best-in-class therapies to fight diseases and improve patients’ lives.
