It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Robert “Bob” Outland, AIA, AICAE, LEED, AP, one of the founding principals of MOA ARCHITECTURE, who passed away on April 7, 2025. Bob was a passionate architect, a thoughtful leader, and a true visionary whose legacy is felt throughout Colorado and beyond.
Alongside Kiyoshi Murata, Bob founded Murata Outland Associates in 1981, which would later become MOA ARCHITECTURE. With roots grounded in integrity and innovation, Bob helped shape not only the firm but also the design landscape of the region. A proud member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, Bob was a strong advocate for culturally responsive design and worked to elevate Native American voices within the architectural profession.
Throughout his decades-long career, Bob mentored countless young professionals and contributed significantly to the built environment, particularly in education, healthcare, and public projects. His retirement in 2016 was marked by a tribute in the Colorado Real Estate Journal, where he was recognized for his lasting impact. Read the article here.
Bob will be remembered for his generosity, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to community-centered design. He is survived by his beloved wife, Chong, and children, Michele and Brian. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to support Parkinson’s research. Donations can be made here.
We at MOA are deeply grateful for Bob’s leadership and friendship, and we honor his legacy every day through our work. He will be dearly missed.
