The new K-5 Lincoln Elementary School houses 384 students in a building that blends traditional materials and educational programs with 21st century learning design principles. The result is a series of collaborative central study spaces at each grade level that provide visual connectivity to the classroom while allowing a variety of small group and individual learning opportunities. The building’s flexibility is further showcased when the Commons Area opens up to the gymnasium and music room with retractable partitions that create performance space for students and overflow seating for spectators.
An important goal for the design of the school was for students to start their educational experience from the moment they reach the curb until the moment they leave. The design team achieved this by using elements of ‘3’ to represent the Oregon, Mormon, and California Trails in the exterior massing of the building, throughout the exterior landscaping plazas, and with the interior design features.
